Fifty years ago on March 17, the Dalai Lama, along with thousand of Tibetans, fled their country. Today, many people around the globe are asking for a Free Tibet. The role of China in the international arena makes our demand more difficult to reach and it seems that only an internal shift in Chinese politics will make it possible for Tibet to regain its freedom. But our support is always important as a pressure point. Tibetans should have the right to decide where they really stand on this issue and the Chinese and the rest of the world should respect and support them. I don't think those conditions are met today. China will have to answer some tough questions and after all is said and done will have to allow or even broker a political solution to its Tibet problem. Tibetans deserve better. The Dalai Lama has always advocated nonviolence and autonomy, but the call for total independence is growing louder from within Tibet and the rest of the world. China's conduct is reprehensible. We have to keep the pressure up to help Tibet. More on Tibet on the NYT.
